## Transcripción

**[00:00]** The best month I ever had on Upwork, I took fewer jobs than I did the month before.

**[00:04]** Not more, I took fewer.

**[00:06]** And I made more money than I ever had.

**[00:08]** So if you're grinding right now, more proposals, more clients, more jobs,

**[00:12]** and somehow you feel more tired and less rich than you did before,

**[00:16]** it's because you've been sold a lie about how money actually works on this platform.

**[00:20]** And I used to believe it too, because everybody tells you the same thing.

**[00:24]** If you want to make more, then go get more new clients through the door.

**[00:27]** It sounds obvious, it almost sounds like common sense,

**[00:30]** but it's also the exact reason the majority of freelancers I know,

**[00:33]** once they find out how to win clients, they hit a ceiling at around, I don't know,

**[00:37]** two, three thousand dollars a month.

**[00:39]** They never break through.

**[00:40]** The real money on Upwork isn't in more clients.

**[00:42]** It isn't. It's in the direct opposite.

**[00:45]** And by the end of this video, you'll know the exact move that took me

**[00:48]** from two thousand dollars a month to ten thousand dollars a month.

**[00:51]** Now, one warning before we start.

**[00:52]** There's a number later in this video you have to stick around for.

**[00:55]** It made me stop taking new clients entirely for 90 days on purpose.

**[01:00]** Most freelancers would never take that risk.

**[01:02]** And it's the single decision that broke me past six figures annually.

**[01:06]** Stay for it, because it's the part that actually matters.

**[01:09]** How do I know this?

**[01:10]** Well, I'm Michael, a half a million dollars earned on Upwork, top one percent expert vetted.

**[01:14]** But the part that matters is this.

**[01:16]** That half a million dollars didn't come from hundreds of different clients.

**[01:19]** It actually came from 57, a handful, if you like, that I never let go of.

**[01:24]** So let's talk about the treadmill that you're probably on right now.

**[01:26]** A developer that I know called Jordan was crushing it on paper, at least.

**[01:30]** Web developer fully booked inquiries coming out of his ears,

**[01:33]** working with maybe, I don't know, 15, 16 clients.

**[01:36]** I think it was across a 60 day window.

**[01:38]** Sounds like a dream, right?

**[01:39]** He was exhausted and somehow still broke.

**[01:42]** 15, 16 clients, 60 hour weeks and a bank balance that looks like a beginner's.

**[01:47]** Well, the reason why is brutal,

**[01:48]** because every one of those 15 clients was a one off.

**[01:52]** A job would land, he'd deliver it and then it would end.

**[01:54]** And the moment it ended, that income vanished.

**[01:56]** He was back in the proposals fighting for the next one.

**[01:59]** He wasn't running a freelance business at all.

**[02:01]** He was running on a treadmill that never stopped.

**[02:03]** And the second that he stepped off, got sick, took a week on holiday,

**[02:07]** his income went to zero.

**[02:08]** That's the trap of get more clients.

**[02:11]** More clients doesn't mean more money.

**[02:13]** It means more churn, more admin, more onboarding, more people just to keep happy even.

**[02:18]** And a business that completely collapses the moment that you stop peddling.

**[02:22]** The math is brutal.

**[02:23]** Think about it like this, 10 one off jobs a month means 10 clients

**[02:26]** that you have to go and find, win, onboard and replace every single month forever.

**[02:31]** Miss a month of hunting and your income, well, it falls off of a cliff.

**[02:35]** It's the most expensive, most fragile way to earn a living that exists.

**[02:39]** You've built yourself the world's most stressful job and called it freedom.

**[02:43]** So here's the flip.

**[02:44]** Instead of 10 one off clients, you want two, maybe three

**[02:48]** who pay you every single month.

**[02:50]** This is the retainer model.

**[02:51]** And it is the single most important shift that you will ever make in your career

**[02:56]** and on up work.

**[02:57]** Jordan took the three best clients that he already had on the books,

**[03:00]** not new ones, ones that he'd already delivered great work for.

**[03:03]** And he changed the conversation.

**[03:05]** Instead of saying, thanks, let me know if you need anything else.

**[03:08]** He said, I've mapped out three months of work that would move the needle for you.

**[03:12]** I can do it as a monthly arrangement.

**[03:13]** You get priority.

**[03:14]** I get to go deeper into your business.

**[03:16]** Here's what that looks like.

**[03:17]** Two of three said, yes, two of three, 66%, $2,200 a month.

**[03:22]** And suddenly, Jordan had $4,400 in recurring income

**[03:26]** before he sent a single proposal, not chasing it,

**[03:29]** not rewriting it every single day.

**[03:31]** Literally arrived without any input.

**[03:34]** He dropped from 15 chaotic clients to a handful of deep ones

**[03:38]** that he built relationships with, cut his hours nearly in half,

**[03:41]** over half even, and made more money because the money was no longer

**[03:45]** walking out the door the day that a job ended.

**[03:48]** It was compounding month after month after month on top of itself.

**[03:52]** A quick one before the next part, comment and tell me,

**[03:54]** are you charging per project or are you charging per month right now?

**[03:58]** Just that. I'll tell you straight which one is capping your income

**[04:02]** because I can almost promise you if you're per project,

**[04:04]** you're leaving the majority of your earning potential on the table.

**[04:07]** Now, why do clients say yes to a retainer?

**[04:10]** Because you can't get one by asking nicely.

**[04:12]** You get one by being the person that they can't afford to lose.

**[04:16]** And that comes down to positioning.

**[04:18]** This is the piece that almost everybody skips

**[04:20]** and it's why their retainer pitch falls flat.

**[04:22]** A generalist, they're replaceable.

**[04:25]** If you're a web developer, there are 10,000 of you out there

**[04:28]** and the client will happily swap you for a cheaper one when the job's done.

**[04:31]** But if you're the person who rebuilt their checkout

**[04:33]** and knows their entire system inside and out,

**[04:35]** replacing you is painful and expensive.

**[04:38]** That's what makes the retainer feel an obvious decision to them

**[04:41]** instead of risky.

**[04:42]** A copywriter that I coached did this deliberately.

**[04:44]** She stopped being a copywriter and became the email specialist

**[04:47]** for a specific type of e-commerce brand.

**[04:49]** It was the same skill, narrower positioning.

**[04:51]** Within four months, she'd had three brands on retainer

**[04:54]** at a little over six grand a month combined

**[04:56]** because to each of them, she wasn't a copywriter

**[04:59]** that they'd hired on Upwork.

**[05:00]** She was the person who understood their customer better than they did.

**[05:03]** When their own team had a question about their audience, they asked her.

**[05:06]** That is what irreplaceable looks like.

**[05:09]** You don't retain a commodity.

**[05:11]** That's not the point of a retainer.

**[05:12]** You retain an expert.

**[05:14]** And once you've got the recurring income,

**[05:15]** the last shift is the one that almost nobody reaches.

**[05:19]** You stop trading your hours for money at all.

**[05:21]** You start building systems.

**[05:22]** You document how you work.

**[05:23]** You start recording your client meetings and phone calls.

**[05:26]** And you bring in help for the pieces that don't need you.

**[05:29]** And slowly, you turn yourself from a freelancer

**[05:31]** who has to be at a keyboard

**[05:32]** into a business that runs whether you're there or not.

**[05:35]** That's the difference between a high income and actual freedom.

**[05:38]** One still owns you.

**[05:39]** The other one, you own it.

**[05:40]** Now, the part that I warned you about, the 90 days.

**[05:43]** A few years in, I had steady retainer income

**[05:46]** and I wanted more.

**[05:47]** Everybody does.

**[05:48]** And I realised the thing that was holding me back,

**[05:50]** it wasn't a lack of new clients.

**[05:52]** It was that I was still spending half of my week

**[05:54]** chasing the new ones,

**[05:55]** which meant I could never go deep enough in client work

**[05:58]** to become truly irreplaceable.

**[05:59]** So I did something that terrified me.

**[06:01]** I stopped.

**[06:02]** For 90 days, I took on zero new clients.

**[06:05]** No new proposals, nothing.

**[06:07]** I poured all of that time into the handful of clients

**[06:09]** that I already had going deeper, solving bigger problems,

**[06:12]** becoming truly essential to their business.

**[06:15]** And the number that made it worth it,

**[06:17]** in those 90 days,

**[06:18]** two of those clients tripled what they were paying me.

**[06:21]** Not because I'd asked,

**[06:22]** because I'd made myself impossible to replace

**[06:25]** and they could feel it.

**[06:27]** I made more in that quarter from fewer clients

**[06:29]** than I had in the six months before chasing new ones.

**[06:33]** That's the whole secret.

**[06:34]** And it's the opposite of everything you've been told.

**[06:37]** It was never more clients.

**[06:39]** It was fewer clients with stronger relationships

**[06:41]** and making yourself the only person

**[06:43]** that they cannot afford to lose.

**[06:46]** Volume is what you chase before you understand

**[06:48]** how the money actually compounds.

**[06:50]** So look at where you are now.

**[06:51]** You're not a freelancer hoping to stay booked anymore.

**[06:54]** You understand the actual machine.

**[06:55]** Retainers over one-offs, positioning over volume.

**[06:59]** That is a business, not a treadmill.

**[07:02]** The next thing to master is what to charge,

**[07:04]** how to raise your rates on the clients

**[07:06]** that you've already got without losing a single one.

**[07:09]** That's the next video.

**[07:10]** It's the difference between a good income and a great one.

**[07:12]** If you've enjoyed this video,

**[07:13]** go and check this one out here.

**[07:15]** I'll catch you in the next one.
